6.5*55mm Sweede out preforms our .308 (7.62*51mm) at 1000m
i think it would do nicely
in my opinion the best 6.5mm round for sniping is the 6.5*284 Norma though
that out preforms the .300 Win mag and arrives with more energy at 1000m
it also drifts less and is MUCH flatter shooting and fits in a short action
just it is a barrel burner

Jeff is correct about the 6.5x284, but I also think the 6.5x55 Swede would be a fine sniper platform if you are talking about a new version that cna accept the higher pressure current ammo. If we are talking about the 40K pressure limit its not acceptable in my book. As a matter of fact I was just chatting with Mel by email about the 6.5x55 SC3 prototype - it looks like someone has come up with the $$ to have Mel make one. I'm VERY interested in seeing how well it works using the boxed Lapua MATCH AMMO. I'm a bit dissapointed in my 6.5x284 barrel longevity, and suspect I may simply convert my custom to a 6.5x55 Swede when I cook the other 6.5x284 barrel.

it must help some with the barrel life if you slow things down some and try not to fire too many long strings, get the barrel super hot, etc, right?

I should have the progress page up in a few weeks on the SC3 prototype being built in 6.5x55.

Let me just say this: The next rifle I build for my personal use is going to be 6.5x55, with Lapua and Norma factory loads, it is VERY suitable for sniping.

The swede has an excellent reputation as being inheriently very accurate. The BC's on the good 6.5 bullets are far better then what you shoot out of a .308, leading to better long range capability. ESPECIALLY with modern loaded rounds from Lapua & Norma.

The SC3 prototype is coming along very nicely. The stock showed up from McMillan and is a perfect fit. The barreled action is in the middle of getting teflon coating right now. I forgot to put up a progress page on this... thats my fault. I'll get some pictures up soon, and will be offering the SC3 for sale very soon with its on page on the site.

The one thing we are having problems with are scope bases. The long action MT Rifleman action is longer than a winchester long action, so a single piece base for a win long action doesn't fit. two pieces are fine. Ken Ferrel does make one that does work, and US Optics will be doing one also.

I just was scanning through this thread and read a few posts about the swede.

Is it suitable for sniping? Yes, in every way. Even the sub 40,000 pressure loads OUT PERFORM the .308 beyond 1000. In fact, the wimpy PMC match loads (140gr at 2560fps) out performs the .308 GMM past 1000 also. I will be trying some of this ammo in the prototype.

Now, if you can get factory 6.5x55 match loads from Lapua and Norma, especially the 123gr, it nearly matchs the .300 Federal GMM ammo in ballistics past 1000 !! with factory match ammo! Obviously, this ammo is very suitable for sniping, and the SC3/MT Rifleman actions will handle those pressures without even trying....

Mel - US Optics will do a single piece for the Win. LA. they will aslo do one that is extenced (it is floating above the barrel) by about 3 inches - perfect for some of the scopes that have extended eye relief.

After many phone calls, and Mel getting two bases from USO (both of which won't fit the MR action) it was finally concluded that none of their current stock Winchester actions will work as is on the MR action. They will have all the proper info on file soon, as MR is sending a destroyed action to USO so they will have the proper dimensions on file.
