G'day all, well finally I have some pics of my new but used Omark Sportco 44 target rifle in 7.62mm. This is what your americans call a PALMA rifle. I went to the range today for our windup shoot and shot 2 applications at 600yds, 10rd and 15rd each. For what I paid, I'M VERY HAPPY. The action is bedded and the bedding isnt cracked, the barrel is in good condition, the stock is also in good condition as well. Even with the shoulder pad being pretty stuffed, its feels comfy and its a nice rifle to shoot. Here a few pictures.

Heres a close up of the action.

Another of the rifle itself.

Heres the specs of the Rifle:
Manufacturer: Omark
Model: Sportco 44
Calibre: 7.62mm
Barrel: 26" Heavy Target Barrel
Action: Omark Single Shot

These rifles are the mainstay of the Australian Target Shooters. Up to the 1960s, surplus SMLEs .303s where used. The Omarks where then evaluted buy the South Australian Rifle Assc and also the Victorian Rifle Assc. It was then accepted as the standard target rifle throughout australia and all the clubs in australia bought these and they became club rifles. This occured up until the early 1990s.

Back to my new baby, after 27 rds fired, my shoulder hurt a tad. But alas, for only AUD$200, I have a very nice rifle that shoots way better then me. I need to get it to a 100m range and see how well it groups.

I was shooting the NRAA factory loads which have:
155gr Sierra PALMA MatchKings
44.5gr of ADI AR2208
Winchester .308 cases
Unsure of the Primer, proberly CCI.

A mate of mine is going to reload for me and I will proberly get him to load the same, but might put in an even 45gr of AR2208 instead of the factory loaded 44.5gr.

Thanks for reading guys.

That's pretty cool, yours is only the second I've seen, but the first is at a local shop for a very decent price in GREAT shape. I've been wondering how it'd shoot, but apparently your report is good. Any range pics??

I haven't had a chance to do any group work yet. When I do, I will post some. I just dont know how it will do with the open sights but it should be alright. Im planning on getting a scope in quick release rings so I can shoot both open sights and scoped when ever I want to.

I was thinking about one of the Bushnell 3-9x40 Mil-Dot scopes but a few guys here in australia have said to me that the Vortex Crossfires are good value for money, The aussie distributer said to me on another forum $270 which INCLUDES shipping on their Crossfire 6-24x50 AO.

For guys who want to get their first centrefire and not pay much, grabbing an old palma rifle and converting it could be a good way to go. they are usually cheap and the all have heavy target barrels on them, but also, they are only usually single shots. Thats the down side unforunatley.

As soon as I can, I will post some groups and range pics.

Be sure to test 45.0 grains before loading a lot of them. That 1/2 grain can make a HUGE difference in how well the rifle shoots.

I'm not familiar with Sportco. The rifle has an almost Eastern European look to it. Where, exactly, was it made? It sounds like a real shooter.

There is something special about shooting these guns with "iron" sights out to 1k. They are a tool which does a job, not pretty. They just do what they do for a long time. It makes me laugh when I hear guys saying you will only get 4-5K rounds out of a .308 when most of these club guns are far beyond that and doing well. I know some have done 14K.
I'm looking for a good one :)
