Hi
That what I'am isued. I have shot in some comp where I've used my servise rifle side by side with semi autos, 300M rapid fire 10rds just as fast and all shoot on target. I think it is the quickest bolt rifle out there.

Krag-Jorgenson rifle action is very fast as well, but yes i have seen SMLE No.4 MK1 rifles emptied like they were semi-auto before. Quite impressive.

imagine a rifle company drilled to put that fire on 300 m targets of a prone man!

I can't say how much faster the LE is than the Krag, but a 10 round mag helps keep the fire up longer :D

Here is alittle tid bit

Practice 3 RAPID FIRE (Mad Minute)

Unlimited shots firer starts standing up in the alert position rifle loaded with 10 rounds bolt closed and safety on. The appearance of the 4 foot screen (as Used in practice 1) is the signal to adopt the prone position and fire as many shots as possible in the one minute the target is exposed. Reloading by clips on demand scoring 5 points per hit on the fig 11 Practice HPS (the record is 37 rds in a minute acheived just after the first world war by a British Skill at Arms Instructor so we shall say the HPS is 37 x 5 so 185 anyone beats that they have cheated!)

For a bolt rifle that fast. This is fired at 200M range

Do they carry extra ammo in 5 round stripper clips still or do they carry extra magazines? I understand why in WW2 they preffered stripper clip feeding, but nowdays those problems dont exist.

The SMLE has a 10 round magazine and is much easier to reload than the Krag-Jorgenson. Other than that they are about the same, i have shot both and the action on the Krag i shot was noticably smoother, but you only have 5 rounds and it takes much longer to reload with the Krag. The SMLE has 10 rounds in a detachable magazine, and can be either stripper clip fed or have extra magazine carried which makes it much faster on the reload and sustains fire twice as long.

The Krag has a smoother action, but the SMLE is better all around, and has a very smooth and fast action as well.

Do you know what year your rifle was made Cliffy?

I would have to go look but if memory serves me correct it is 1954 longbranch with 5 groove left hand rifling, it has be acurize at the aroury and shoot very well. My best group at 100m is 1.5inch prone with open sights.

.303

I have had a .303 since 1988. I first had one of the Aussie Lithgow Enfields. I found it to be superior in quality than the Indian made 'Field that I have now. The Lithgow had far less bolt slop, and seemed to shoot tighter patters with store loads.

I have taken numerous Whitetails with the .303, a few in excess of 190 yards (the groupings are a bit wide though owing to the fact that I have not tweaked the reload like I want it). I would like to find one of those sniper versions from WWII with the wooden cheekpiece and the big bad scope.
All in all, a good round, and a good piece of equipment, not breathtakingly accurate, but cheap (130.00), durable, and has a good drag through the woods quality. The big drawback there is probably the weight. It is a heavy rascal, and if it is one of those "wire-wrapped" 'Fields, it is particularly heavy. I removed the wire on mine to lighten the load. But, that being said, there is hardly any recoil to speak of because of the weight absorbing it.

Great Forum, Great Information. Prayers go out to all.
