Heh, M39/B FMJ 9x19 will have a better chance of penetrating than a 7.62x51 Oryx. The M39/B is designed to retain its shape as much as possible upon impact, while the Oryx is designed to mushroom as much as possible, dissipating the energy over a much larger area as well as in the deformation process, so the vest will have an easier time handling it.

My point still stands, though. For a sniper, location, location and aim is what matters most.

I am going to hop back and forth on this one. Could a .22 be practical for sniping? Yes and no. I would like to remind everyone, in urban engagments the bullet typically impacts before sound is heard.

So if it is a lone crazy guy, hes down. If it is a group of guys say, in a store and one comes out to make demands, taking him out with a subsonic round to the head wouldn't alert the people inside. Aside from the body falling.

A .22 bolt action or semi-auto can stay on target extremly well. If you have a 20-22" heavy barrel on it, you get some impressive results.

Nekekami and I can both agree it is 90% situation based on what to use and what will happen. I personally wouldn't use it past 50m.

A favorite sidearm I have used for a long time is the Walther P22. Why? Because recoil is nil, accuracy is nice for the distance, and you get a lot of chances. So if you are aiming to save your life or injure (incapacitate) you have a good chance of doing it.

Of course, I have now switched to something else, which isn't applicable for this thread. :)

yep
how much can a vest take though?
That depends on the class of vest.

The KS94 I'm issued to wear for some missions weighs 10.64kg with plates, and is certified for 5.56x45AP, 7.62x51 FMJ and 7.62x51AP from 5m away, and .300WM FMJ from 10m away, with multiple-hit capacity if the hits are 5cm or more from each other, measured from center to center of the impact areas. It's manufactured by Ă…kers Krutbruk. The same kind of plates are also sold to the UK, for use by commando units.

i would think that they would be for urban areas because here in Australia the main sniper weapon used by the police is the 22-250.

probably a good alternative to the .223 for a law enforcement sniper
Another good alternative would be the .243, it would serve extremely well in the LE sniper. Thats just my thoughts though.

I've only really seen two LE/Military .22 LR weapons. The De Lise carbine, which has a heavy silencer built into the barrel, and the SV-99, which is threaded for a silencer. I imagine these weapons are useless beyond 100 meters (100 meters below the stated MOUT or UO average engagement distance, at least according to the US Army), and I imagine that their ability to provide a lethal shot in the groin area is also heavily limited (Note i'm saying "Imagine", and not proven fact).

They may be excellent rifles for a silent takedown, but they wouldn't be too effective in a fight.

Ps; Heya.

eye isnt a large target, hard to get eye shots on a moving target
with an MP5SD you will do a bit more damage and its jsut as quiet
not saying that shooting them in the eye wouldnt stop them because it would

CM2K

Not to sound arrogant or anything, but the SV99 was developed for only 1 purpose to kill Chechnian freedom fighters without causing alot of noise. they (russians) took this practice directly from the chechnians as they were using 22 hunting rifles with coke bottles for silencers

Sorry to drege up an old post. A local PD in my area has both .308 and 22-250 sniper weapons. (or did a couple of years ago) The 22-250 is used for head shots when there are people, hostages etc behind the target. The round basicaly disengerates upon inpact, but kills instantly with a well placed head shot. Why 22-250 instead of 223? My GUESS is the much higher velocity of the 22-250 expands the bullet more reliably, flatter shooting, and inherantly more accurate round. It may have been someones pet round as well.

If you read Delta Force by Eric Haney (a biography) he stated they made hand loaded .308 round that were good out to about 400 yards I believe for just such an occasion. Shooting in crowds with a .308 would make me nervous. My GUESS on this is they used a light bullet, like 125 gr, to max velocities so the round would not overpenetrate.

it depends on the amour type, and the projectile size and type, eg plate steel or kevlar vests, 6mm plate steel will stop a standard 5.56mm round however, it doesnot stop a.308 or 7.62x39 eigther. i also heard that the .338lupar is supposidly able to penetrate 16mm plate at 100m? does anyone know if this is true?
