Hi guys,

I'm tossing around the idea of buying or building an AR or more likely DPMS platform .308. I've had my eyes set on an RPR for a bolt action but have recently been giving the semi-auto some thought.

I have never built a rifle before and have been trying to do research but coming up at a loss. I can't afford a real expensive rifle but don't want garbage either. So how do I find out who makes quality uppers, lowers, etc.? And does anyone make a good quality full upper or should I piece that together and buy a barrel separate like Krieger?

I appreciate the help. Just don't know where to go for finding out what's good quality for my price range.

If your budget is up to $2K and have no experience with AR build, you would be better off buying one. AR10 build is bit different than AR15 build and trickier than you may assume.

With the budget, I can think of 2 brands top off of my head are ArmaLite and DPMS G2 rifles. I'm pretty sure there are other brands that will fit your needs, but those 2 are ones I had some satisfactory experience under 2K.

Some guys suggested 6.5 Grendal on above and you should consider those options as well.

I agree with NorCal on the AR15 - especially if this is your first build.

AR15 is AR15, an AR15 part is an AR15 part - pretty standard mostly - hard to find things that don't mate up. AR10's on the other hand are not all designed around the same universalism - this may be partly why you were finding yourself at a loss.

Dunno if they're any good or not but palmetto State sells a ar10 308 for like 599 or 699 if you wanted to get into something cheap.

But like the the above posters say 6.5 Grendel for a ar15 is supposed to be the ticket these days.

*The other guys on the forum know much more than me, just wanted to mention the PSA ar10

Stay away from the PSA el cheapo stuff in an Ar10. Stay away from the Armalite as they are odd ball when the whole world is going DPMS as their standard specs. I know as I build custom Ar10 platform rifles on a regular basic. Cheapo is not the answer in an Ar10 platform.

I do agree on the cheap components on AR10 platform. One things goes wrong, the cost will be sky rocketed.

I also agree on going DMPS parts due to aftermarket comparability. However, I just can't let go of Armalite build. It's just way better than other competitors at similar lever in reliability and functionality for my experience. Maybe it's just me and not a factual matter. Out of all the builds, Armalite builds were the most sturdiest, reliable, and accurate for whatever the reason.

If one wants a solid budget AR10 set, I'd get an Aero Precision M5 3 piece set. Then your upper, lower, and hand guard will all match. Everything else is pretty universal for fit.
