Half a Mile

I cleared some trees out on the farm and ended up with a clear 1/2 mile stretch kinda by accident. Of course once I saw that I had to put up some targets and give it a whirl. 870 yds is tough ! (at least for me,lol) I'm using my SA NM M1A with some HSM 168gr AMAX bullets and my Rem. 5R Milspec with some HSM 178 gr AMAX. Got the ammo from Mele here on SC. Best group? 3 shot 2 1/2" spread with the 5R. 3 shot 6" spread with the M1A. Worst groups? When only 2 rounds out of three hit the feed sacks i'm using for targets. I don't seem to be very consistant. Probably averaging around 9 or 10 inch spreads. Maybe thats not all that bad, as there always seems to at least be a little wind and a chart I have shows that a 1 mph wind at 900 yds can push a bullet 7.9". Thoughts? Opinions?

I'd say keep practicing. Put some wind flags at regular distances down your range.

Ok, I see where that could sound funny. What I meant was when doing the clearing I didn't realize that I was going to make a half mile view. I can't really put wind flags up along the way either because I'm shooting from my back yard on a ridge, across a rock quarry, a swamp, a pecan orchard, and to a hayfield where I have the target set up. Guess I could put a flag by the target and at the picnic table I shoot from. It's fun though and freaks out my buddys when I show them, lol. Will keep practicing !
