Mossberg 590A1 review

My new shotgun just came in. 590A1, 5+1, 18 1/2 inch barrel with a bead sight. Model 51411. Went with this particular configuration because I like my shotguns simple. I previously had and 870 Express Tactical and an 870P. Both were great guns but I just wanted the Mossberg.

I'm sure most are aware of the main differences between the 590's and 870's, but I prefer the shell lifter design and the safety location on the Mossberg. The action is quite smooth. The gun feels solid and I'm sure it would take a beating.

I have a few gripes though. Overall, the 870's I owned had better QC. The cartridge stop on the 590A1 wouldn't let the 4th and 5th shell out of the mag tube. Putting a slight bend in it so the forend pushed it farther out of the way solved the feeding issue. The hole for the front sight, although centered perfectly, was drilled at an angle. It doesn't look awful with a bead because it's round, but any other sight will be obviously canted. I did call Mossberg about the barrel and I'm very happy with the customer service. They were very helpful, polite, easy to deal with and said a new barrel will be shipped out soon.

I haven't shot the gun yet but it's a keeper for sure.

I've got a 590A1 that I bought probably 15+ years ago. It has a ghost ring sight and a bayonet lug. Heavy Duty weapon.

I found a M590-A1 completely by surprise. I wanted the 8+1 20inch version and was told by 4 LGS that they were nearly impossible to come by as that was what the Military had gone to. On the way home I stopped at a little hole in the wall shop and was told the same thing. As the guy was going to show me something else I rested my hands on a rack of shotgun and low and behold there it was.....He thought they had sold it months before.

So before anyone else could weasel in on my find I snapped it up.

Recoil isn't too bad even shooting 00 buck mag loads. So after finding the 590-a1, having bought a good working Kel Tec KSG and picking up a 870 just because it was time to retire my old Mossberg 500 I shot comps with for years.

Talking to a friend that was back from Egypt and a tour with the Army hr took a liking to my old well used 500 so I passed it on for another 5000 round or so.

Here in VA. your model was the only configuration that I COULD find, along with the Speedfeed stock model. How do you like it compared to the 870?
