So I just worked a deal with a guy to get a Rem 7400. I know not a great gun but that is what he had to trade. It is in a 30-06. I want to use it to replace borrowing my brothers Rem 700 in a 30-06. Going to use it to kill whitetail at 100-300 yd range. Again I know it's not the ideal for that but what I have. I want to beef this thing up a little. I found a nice quad rail forend I'm going to save up for.

I live in NYS so I have to be careful with what I do to this gun. I can't use any stocks with a pistol grip or buffer tube design. I have read that the stock is really just a Rem 870 stock. I would really like a deep well "gooseneck" style stock like Promag makes but I can't find any for the 870. Ideally I would like one that adjusts in length via a jack screw so it can be changed easily in the field. The best I can find is this magpul. Does anyone know of anything better that is NYS compliant?

Lastly I would like to put a muzzle brake on it. Yes they are NYS legal as long as they do not screw onto the barrel. Does anyone know of any for this gun that clamp, weld, or attach via other means?

Should have the rifle in a week or two. I'm just trying to put together a build plan for it. Thanks for the ideas.

I understand wanting to upgrade a rifle...but for close range hunting that rifle should do just fine in the factory configuration.

If you want something nicer...I would sell the 7400 and buy what you want.

How much are you looking to spend? do you want a synthetic stock or wood? just about any muzzle brake can be pinned and welded by a gunsmith, are you looking for one in particular you can pin yourself? I don't know the laws for NY so does it have to be welded as well? I'm a huge fan of Griffin Armament muzzle brakes/flash hiders. You may want to look at those.

I'm not familiar enough with a remmy 7400, based on the comments of others, you may have a sentimental attachment to this rifle. That's ok but it seems to be the only reason any rational person would want to invest in an in upgrades to what may remain an inaccurate weapon. If you can't use it the way it is and it won't likely be more accurate, you might want to consider something else.

On the other hand if the rifle has a sentimental meaning to you, go for it just realize that the money you put in you'll probably not get that $ back. This site has a members, most of whom are trying to shoot groups at distances that your weapon by all accounts will never be capable of no matter what you do within reason.
